Chapter 9

By how quickly Paxton had arrived after Henry called him, he knew that his alpha had pushed the speed limit more than a little. Normally, he would've berated him about it, but now wasn't the time or place.

Henry led them to his bistro table and had the reverend and Paxton sit down since there were only two chairs. Meanwhile, he hurried to his kitchen to bring back water and simple snacks since he really didn't know what else to do in the moment.

Once Henry returned, Thompson nodded to him. “I'm sorry for showing up at your apartment unannounced but I have very important news.”

“Like the fact that you're a werewolf?” Paxton growled lightly.

Henry had recognized the scent when he originally went to answer the door. Yet, when it had been the reverend on the other side, he just couldn't wrap his mind around it. After all, they were in his office and hadn't caught the scent.

Then, Henry remembered that the reverend had been wearing something heavily scented when they met him. Whatever cologne or scented product he had on had masked his werewolf scent. Henry was curious about what exactly it was and if it'd be handy for him and Paxton to have as well.

“Yes,” Thompson said calmly, his hands folded on the table before him.

“Why didn't you tell us in the office?”

“It's complicated, and that's why I'm here today,” Thompson sighed then cleared his throat. “I do know more about the hunters than I've let on.”

“I knew it,” Paxton grunted, his posture stiff and guarded.

Henry twisted his hands together as he stood by Paxton's side, just slightly behind the chair. His heart was pounding in his chest as he kept an eye on the reverend. Despite being kin and clergy, Henry didn't trust him for a moment.

“Just please let me explain,” Thompson murmured, maintaining eye contact with both of them. “I was once very anti-werewolf. I knew they existed because I've encountered one myself in a small town where I used to preach...”

The haunted look in the reverend's eyes made Henry's stomach churn.

“I saw with my own eyes the kind of savagery they – we – are capable of,” Thompson continued. “After then, I helped however I could to track werewolves, although I was never involved in catching, harming, or killing them. Yet, the fact that I helped to spread fear and discrimination...”

Thompson shook his head. “Through my hatred, I came across a hunter named Damon that I eventually fell for. We worked together in our own ways to try and rid the world of werewolves however we could. Eventually, we moved around from town to town, trying to help with the growing populations until we finally came here...

“Then, one day, I was attacked by a werewolf that we had been hunting down. It had happened so... simply. I thought it was an ugly dog and it just suddenly bit me. It chose me out of the group I had been with at the time.”

Henry furrowed his brows since the behavior naturally made him think of Sebastian.
